Development of the beam loss monitor for beam halo measurement in the J-PARC RCS

Yoshimoto, Masahiro; Harada, Hiroyuki; Okabe, Kota; Kinsho, Michikazu

Proceedings of 4th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2015) (Internet), p.575 - 579, 2016/01

In the J-PARC RCS, transverse beam profiles including both the beam core and halo at extraction beam transport line (3NBT) were measured by using a combination with a wire scanner type beam scraper and some beam loss monitors (BLMs). Our final goal of this halo monitor is to measure the intra-bunch beam halo of extracted two bunches from the RCS. Thus the plastic scintillator and photomultiplier (PMT) assemblages were adopted as the BLMs with quick time response. However, we found that the BLMs detected not only the radiation from the wire but also reflected one from other devices and wall. Therefore we tried to develop new-type BLMs, which are scintillation-type BLM of lead glass and Cherenkov-type BLM of quartz or UV acrylic. In this presentation, we will report on the overview and experimental results of the new-type BLMs together with the outline of halo monitor system.

Measurement of Momentum Spread of the Injection Beam with Longitudinal Tomography Method in the J-PARC RCS

Yoshimoto, Masahiro; Harada, Hiroyuki; Hotchi, Hideaki; Saha, P. K.; Tamura, Fumihiko; Yamamoto, Masanobu; Kinsho, Michikazu

Proceedings of 6th International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC '15) (Internet), p.944 - 946, 2015/06

In the J-PARC RCS, the beam tuning toward the design output beam power of 1MW were started after the completing of the beam energy and beam current upgrades in the LINAC. One of the important issues to achieve the 1MW beam operation is the optimization of the injection beam from the LINAC. Due to the longitudinal beam tuning in the LINAC, the momentum spread of the injected beam into the RCS was measured with the longitudinal tomography method. Our longitudinal tomography tool had been developed using the simple algorithm with the Convolution Back Projection (CBP) method for the beam storage mode of the RCS. Accordingly, we improved this tool to expand into the acceleration mode. By tuning the tank level of the debuncher 2 in the LINAC, it can be measured the momentum spread was shifted from 0.06% to 0.15%. Moreover, these distributions of the momentum spread are consistent with the simulation results.

Proceedings of 2005 Particle Accelerator Conference (PAC '05) (CD-ROM), p.299 - 301, 2005/00

Development of the beam diagnostics system for the J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron is described. The system consists of Beam Position Monitor (BPM), Beam Loss Monitor (BLM), Current monitors (DCCT, SCT, MCT, FCT, WCM), Tune meter system, 324MHz-BPM, Profile monitor, and Halo monitor. BPM electrode is electro-static type and its electronics is designed for both COD and turn-by-turn measurements. Five current monitors have different time constants in order to cover wide frequency range. The tune meter is consisted of RFKO and the beam pick-up electrode. For the continuous injected beam monitoring, 324MHz-BPM detects Linac frequency. Two types of profile monitor are multi-wire for low intensity tuning and the residual gas monitor for non-destructive measurement.

Optical spectroscopy of plasma plume induced by pulsed laser deposition of TiO$$_{2}$$ thin films

Kitazawa, Shinichi; Yamamoto, Shunya

Transactions of the Materials Research Society of Japan, 28(4), p.1133 - 1136, 2003/12

The epitaxial growth of high quality TiO$$_{2}$$ films has attracted much interest from the viewpoints of basic science and applications. In the synthesis process of TiO$$_{2}$$ films, the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method is widely employed because of its advantage for materials with high melting point. The laser irradiation generates plasmas from Ti bulk targets, and the evaporated Ti particles have interactions with buffer dioxide gas before/after the epitaxial growth. We observed the optical emission spectra from the plumes generated by laser ablation in order to improve on the epitaxial growth under proper conditions. The spectra show dependences of energy densities and wavelengths of the laser. The spectra are investigated for relevancies to the quality of films and crystallographic relationships that were assessed by x-ray diffraction, x-ray pole figures and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy.

JAERI-Tech 2001-082, 23 Pages, 2001/12

JAERI-Tech-2001-082.pdf:2.54MB

The improved mechnical sensor, j$$times$$B has been desiged and developed. Materials of a load cell (strain gauge and sensor beam) and sensing coil/frame are selected to be neutron resistance. In order to reduce temperature drift of the sensor signal, four strain gauges with the same electrical property and geometrical size are bonded on the sensor beam by Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ spraying process. These gauges form an electrical bridge circuit. The zero-level drift of the output of the load cell was reduced to about 1/20 compared with the old sensor. Non-linearity of the output of load cell and sensitivity of the j$$times$$B sensor was observed. The deviation of sensitivity from the fitting line was less than 7 % in high magnetic field region. The sensitivity of the sensor was gradually decreased by about 30 % at neutron fluence of (1.8$$sim$$2.8)$$times$$10$$^{23}$$ n/m$$^{2}$$ in high magnetic field region.

Microstructural assessment of damaged materials in FBR assessment of creep damage in weldment

Momma, Yoshio*; *; ; ; ; Aoto, Kazumi

JNC TN9400 2000-044, 22 Pages, 2000/03

JNC-TN9400-2000-044.pdf:1.37MB

ln the past the microstructural observation was mostly applied to understand the materials behavior qualitatively in R&D of the new materials and the life prediction for the fast breeder reactor components. However, the correlation between the changes in properties and microstrutures must be clarified to ensure the structural integrity. Particularly we are interested in the method to correlate the long-term properties and microstructural changes at high temperatures. The current research is to quantify the changes in microstructure of the weld metal for the welded structure of the reactor vessel. ln this research we have conducted creep testing of the weld metals at 823 and 873K up to 37,000h. Two types of the weld metals (16Cr-8Ni-2Mo and 18Cr-12Ni-Mo) were subjected to the creep testing. Based on the areas of the precipitates, the microstructural characterization with time and creep damage was attempted. The creep strength of the 16Cr-8Ni-2Mo weld metal is lower than that of the 18Cr-12Ni-Mo one at higher stresses, shorter times. But there is a trend toward to become similar strength with lower stresses and increasing times. The creep-rupture ductility of the 16Cr-8Ni-2Mo weld metal is superior to that of the 18Cr-12Ni-Mo one. The creep-rupture takes place at the interface of the sigma ($$sigma$$) phases precipitated in the delta ($$delta$$) ferrites at 823K lower stresses and 873K. The amount of precipitates in the 16Cr-8Ni-2Mo weld metal is smaller than that in the 18Cr-12Ni-Mo one at each temperature and stress. Also it is apparent that the amount of the precipitates is primarily responsible to the decomposition of the $$delta$$ phase, because the amount of the residual $$delta$$ ferrites measured by the Magne-Gauge reduces with times. Using the Larson-Miller parameter it was possible to correlate the amount of the precipitates linearly with the LMP values.
